COMMUNITY NURSING

Filipino nurses train for ASEAN economic community in 2015

Nursing leaders from North and Central Luzon conducted a regional road mapping and capacity-building last March 28 at Saint Louis University in their effort to prepare Filipino nurses for the challenges of global competition that will be brought about by the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

The event, which was a follow-up activity after the group gathered for a roundtable discussion last month, was coordinated by a core group composed of Professional Regulation Commission Regional Director Teofilo Gaius Sison Jr., Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) Regional Governor Lolita Oracion, PNA-Baguio Chapter president Ruth Tingda, Association of Deans in the Philippine Colleges of Nursing (ADPCN) National vice president Mary Grace Lacanaria, and Philippine Nursing Research Society (PNRS) National president Erlinda Palaganas.

The members of the PNA, ADPCN, and PNRS gathered recently to map out their strategies in preparing the Filipino nurse for the challenges of global competition for the discussion organized by the PRC-CAR and updated themselves on AEC developments.

PRC Chair Teresita Manzala, talked on AEC 2015 and global competitiveness; alignment of education with the Philippine qualifications framework and mutual recognition agreement for Nursing by Board of Nursing Chair Carmencita Abaquin; Nursing competitiveness roadmap by Board of Nursing member Marco Antonio Sto. Tomas; continuing professional development by Board of Nursing member Perla Po; and alignment of the Nursing Law to global developments through amendments by Board of Nursing member Leonila Faire.

In press statement, the PRC said the discussion is one of the activities under the Commission’s 2014 Planning Tool Convergence Program.

It aimed to capacitate regional nursing leaders in championing global competitiveness programs at the grassroots level and prepare them for regional road-mapping in the Cordillera, and Regions 1, 2, and 3.

Before regional mapping, the participants also formulated their regional action plans and signed a pledge of commitment to implement their respective plans.
